KidZone Summer Camps 2012

Summer Camps 2012 Day 1

Mr. Tony teaches our Kitchen Chemistry campers about the reaction created by Diet Coke and Mentos.

Most of the kids said that this was their favorite experiment today.

Today, our much anticipated summer camps began at KidZone. Here is a sneak peek of what is going on so far at camp. After a long day, I am exhausted. But I just wanted to sit down and write for a moment before I get ready for a much needed rest. Things are going quite smoothly, and it seems that the kiddos are just as excited about camp as all of the instructors are!

Mr. Tony is our resident scientist at KidZone, so I got to hang out with our campers and serve as the “lovely assistant”. I must say that I learned a lot today, and I also had so much fun! (To see more photos from camp, check out our Facebook.)

In our next camps, I was too busy herding sheep (balloons) and building sandcastles with campers to take very many pictures. I will do better tomorrow, I promise.

Remember, you are never too old to learn like a child or have the imagination of a child.

Introducing Mr. Tony Munch

For those of you who frequent the Kearney Area Children’s Museum, his face is a familiar one. Tony has worked at KidZone for just over a year. He said, “I love KidZone. I couldn’t ask for a better place to work!” Tony helped with several of our camps last summer, and he is a blast! Tony and I will be teaching the Kitchen Chemistry as well as the Campfire Cooking, Stories and Fun camps together.

Tony is a biochemistry major at UNK, and is in charge of the science experiments at KidZone on Science Saturdays. After graduation, he plans to attend medical school. He said that his dream job woud be as an anesthesiologist.

Tony dresses up during free play during our Girl Power construction camp last summer.

Tony talks to Totally Trains campers about the model trains.

Fun facts about Tony:

He just ran a triathlon this weekend.

He can solve a Rubik’s Cube.

If he could have any super power, he would like to be able to use the Force. (I have to high-five him for this one! I’m a huge Star Wars fan…why didn’t I ever think of this?)

Mr. Tony and I cannot wait to see you this summer!

Chemistry in your kitchen

I had some pretty brutal finals this semester. May I just say that I am happy to be back at KidZone? Although I am one of those people that loves school, summer is a very welcome break from my life as a college student. I get to be a kid again, even if it is just for a few months.

Those of you who have been in the museum on a Saturday may have caught Science Saturdays with Mr. Tony. I am excited to announce that our very own Mr. Tony will be helping me with our Kitchen Chemistry camp! We will be learning all about science experiments that can be done using everyday kitchen items. Do you have a young chemist or a child that loves to ask why things happen the way they do? If so, this is the perfect camp! We also have many more exciting camp options for your child. Check them out on our website!

Look what I’ve been working on!

This is my second year as one of the summer camp instructors at KidZone. Ask anyone who knows me: I love my job, and I have been enthusiastically planning camps since the day we released our brochure.

While browsing the popular website Pinterest, I found an idea that would help with the hands-on learning element that we at KidZone believe is so very important.

I did pretty well in high school shop class, but for this project, I enlisted my dad, who I am convinced is the most patient man on earth. This afternoon, my dad and I built, sanded and painted the first of three tables that will hold removable cement mixing tubs. (I think that I need a more clever word for these tables.) I’m excited to fill these with sand, water, science experiments and goo (for grossology camp).

Hope to see you at camp this summer!
